Fundamental movement skills have declined previous years among children participating in sports. This might be the results of a passive everyday life, and the increasing focus on sport specific training for young children. Poor fundamental movement skills result in difficulties later on, when sport specific skills are taught. By increasing the amount of motor skill training and variety during practice, the juniors will be more likely to succeed in their future sports careers.
The purpose of this practice-based thesis was to change the attitude among handball coaches about fundamental movement skill training, and to motivate the coaches to include more motor skill exercises to the trainings. A guide, consisting of information of why and how motor skills should be implemented in handball practice, was compiled by a development process using a spiral model. The evaluation during the process was done by group interviews and a questionnaire.
Information about motor skill training was gathered from evidence-based literature, consisting of research articles and educational books. A close cooperation with coaches in the sports club was of great importance, so that a guide based on the specific need for the club, could be created. According to feedback, gathered from the coaches, an increase of motor skill training happened during the test period of the compiled guide. The attitude about motor skill training also shifted to the better.
