Mobile applications can be developed using many different technologies. Since their inception in 2015, Progressive Web Apps have aimed to bring the advantages of web development by providing native-like functionality while maintaining cross-platform compatibility.
The purpose of the research was to examine the differences in performance between Progressive Web Apps and native mobile development solutions and determine whether Progressive Web Apps have the potential to replace native mobile development solutions. To achieve these research objectives, a quantitative investigation was conducted by coding the same sample application using both technologies. A range of common life use-case features were tested to evaluate the application performance.
The findings revealed that Progressive Web Apps demonstrated comparable performance to native Android apps in most scenarios. In conclusion, Progressive Web Apps represent a promising approach for efficient and cost-effective application development, bridging the gap between web and native experiences.
