Tiivistelmä
This thesis aimed to design and produce a muffler for the Tampere Formula Student team's vehicle for the 2024 season. The team comprises students from both Tampere University of Applied Sciences (UAS) and the Tampere University. The second development cycle documented in this thesis, continues the research initially started during the 2023 season. This data gathered from the previous season was used for comparison during the design and validation steps.

The muffler development cycle consisted of designing, prototyping, testing, and validating. The design phase combined a 3D layout and mechanical design with various simulation tools. It also analysed the data collected from the previous season’s vehicle. During the prototype phase, the chosen design was manufactured from the materials provided by the team’s partner. The testing of the prototype was done according to Tampere Formula Student’s testing plan with the ability to use a modified vehicle setup from the previous season. The validation of the design was done by analysing the data gathered from the testing season, and the development loop was then closed for the simulation and mechanical design.

Most of the calculations for this type of thesis were done by simulations, but the principles affecting were explained in the theory section. GT-Suite software used for 1D-simulations is licenced to Tampere Formula Student. All of testing measurements were carried out in the Tampere UAS automotive laboratory.
