Alzheimers disease (AD) is a degenerative diseases that affects the neurological system. Approximately 10million people are affected globally by Alzheimers disease. The disease is characterised by a progressive deterioration of the cognitive ability of affected individual. The management of Alzheimers disease have relied majorly on the use of pharmacological method. Evaluation of alternative ways of managing the Alzheimer's patients will further support the use of medication and improve the quality of life of AD patients. Therefore, this study was designed with the aim of evaluating the probable benefits of music in the management of AD patients.
This study was done through a qualitative, systematic review. Articles with years of publication between 2014 and 2023 were identified from different databases. The Theory of Comfort by Katharine Kolcaba was adapted as the theoretical framework of the study.
Three (3) major themes and ten (10) sub-themes emerged from the ten (10) articles that were subjected to thematic content analysis. The major findings showed that music possessed the ability to improve the behavior of AD patients through reduction in agitation, anxiety and reduction in the frequency of resisting care. Music also plays a role in improving memory, cognition, motor function and communication. It was also revealed that music can be used to lower stress, improve mood and enhance the quality of life of AD patients. In conclusion , music be use employed as alternation safe and effective method for the management of Alzheimer’s disease patients.
