Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this thesis is to obtain measures on how intercultural communication can be strengthened and improved among the patients and healthcare providers. The goal is to promote effective communication and care between health professionals to reduce errors in delivering care to the patients.
The data collection method and analysis for this study involved qualitative research, review of relevant literature, and inductive content analysis of the materials found. The articles were obtained from reliable sources such as CINAHL, PubMed, Theseus, SeAMK Finna and credible sources like Google Scholar. The search was conducted using keywords such as language barrier, effective communication, and intercultural healthcare. A total of 15 articles were selected for the literature review and analysis, following specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, with publications ranging from 2013 to 2024.
This study was conducted to identify the factors that create language barriers in real-life situations, understand the impact of these barriers on effective communication, and make recommendations based on the study results to improve communication.
The data analysis resulted in the formulation of three categories, each consisting of different methods to strengthen and improve the intercultural communication. The categories are as follows: Culturally Sensitive Care (Open and Sensitive Communication, Cultural Beliefs, Interpreter Services); Communication Skills Training for Nurses (Innovative Learning, Educational Programs, Workshops, and Transformative Learning); and Roles of Healthcare Institutions (Leadership Approach and Intergroup Communication). These results have obtained measures on how intercultural communication can be strengthened among the patients and healthcare providers. The results also promoted effective communication and care between health professionals to reduce errors in delivering care to the patients. The results of this study add to the limited research on the challenges and impacts of language barriers in intercultural healthcare. The strategies identified in the literature can help guide healthcare providers in overcoming language barriers and enhancing their practices. Additional evidence-based research is recommended to further validate some of the interventions found in this review.
