Nurses are the frontliners in facing patients’ illnesses and proving holistic care and support. Nevertheless, it is also physically and emotionally demanding profession with heavy workload, enormous stress, work in three shifts and low salary. Due to the intensity of the nursing duties burnout becomes a common outcome that nurses are facing and influencing the safety care provided for the patients.
The aim of this literature review was to explore the effects of nurses’ burnout on patient safety. The purpose of the research was to collect current data available on the topic of nurses’ burnout effecting patient safety for the hospital administration to be aware. The research was intended to reduce burnout among nurses as well as ensure patient safe care.
Research was conducted using literature review. The search was done using CINAHL and PubMed databases with implementation of inclusion and exclusion criteria. The selected articles were analyzed using content data analysis method. The data was extracted and further organized for defining themes and subthemes.
The literature review explored the effects of nurses’ burnout on patient safety. Nurses’ burnout had effects on patient safety based on nurses’ personal level meaning nurses’ emotional exhaustion, lack of personal accomplishment and depersonalization. From the organizational side lack of staff, medication errors and work overload.
Nurses’ burnout and patient safety depend on the organizational structure and health care managers who should put their time and effort to maintain wellbeing of the working environment and keeping nurses’ interests and patient safety as major priority.
