Tiivistelmä
This thesis explores the creation of an immersive experience founded upon escapism and storytelling.
Escapist experiences are designed to transcend participants into a feel of another reality, offering a state for deep immersion and engagement. Grounded in psychological and socio-cultural studies of the human psyche, they seek to captivate individuals by offering an escape from the mundane. Within the basic frameworks of Experience Design, this thesis primarily concentrates on the creation of such escapist experiences and exposes the essential elements required to design them.
Storytelling is a primitive comprehension tool for a human. Stories evoke connections and emotional resonance. Narrative structures excel as tools for conveying information in a manner that deeply engages humans, allowing them to retain and recall it for longer periods compared to mere logical information. This thesis explores the psychological importance along with theoretical frameworks of storytelling. Furthermore, it showcases the integration of escapism to create a practical framework for an immersive escapist experience.
This concept of an escapist experience was developed for Venejoen Piilo, an accommodation provider nestled in Kontiolahti, Finland. Specifically tailored for the historical mill situated within the company's premises, this innovative concept was created as part of a collaboration with the "HOHA - Houkuttelevuutta harvaan asutuille alueille" project. This project was conducted in partnership with the Hungry for Finland network, affiliated with Haaga Helia University of Applied Sciences.
The resulting customer journey map, stemming from this concept, was featured in "Tartu tarinaasi - asiakaspolun tarinallistamisen käsikirja," a storytelling guidebook published in October 2023. This publication serves as a practical resource for integrating storytelling into the design of experiences for food tourism providers.
The concept developed in this thesis is crafted through the Experience Design process, placing a specific focus on concept validation – iterations of the concept. Unstructured interviews were conducted with members of the HOHA project group and the owner of Venejoen Piilo, providing invaluable guidance throughout the process development. The experience concept outlined in this thesis serves as a foundational framework, upon which concrete plans will be collaboratively constructed with the owner. Following the conclusion of the thesis process, this concept will be further refined into a tangible experience blueprint for their business.
