Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this thesis is to address gender equality, which has not been achieved anywhere in the world. The thesis examines inequality in Finland and focuses on one aspect that encapsulates gender inequality: The nipple.
The thesis consists of a theoretical and artistic part. The theoretical part of the thesis discusses photography and feminism, introducing several artists. It outlines the factors and thoughts behind the artistic part of the thesis.
The final part of the thesis introduces the documentary photography project “Nipple” 2022-2023. Twenty-one final photographs were exhibited in RAW degree show Tampere.
The documentary photography project focuses on gender inequality on how women's bodies are controlled. If such a small thing has such a stigma and nipples are so over-sexualised that women have to cover them at all times, it is obvious that there are much more harmful effects of patriarchy than that.
The meaning of the art project is to protest against gender inequality and draw attention to this double standard many of us deal with on a daily basis. It offers a channel for women to feel empowered and take part in the fight against patriarchy by adding their voices to the conversation and challenging people to see the internalised misogyny.
