In today's rapidly changing business landscape, organisations recognise the need to revamp traditional IT operating models to foster agility, collaboration, customer centricity, and value delivery in response to digital challenges and opportunities, thus ensuring competitiveness and responsiveness.
This action research was aimed at understanding the core principles of the new IT operating model in the case Company and how the role of Product Owners can contribute towards its incremental adoption. The goal was to understand the role and responsibilities of Product Owners as defined by the case company and identify opportunities for making an impact, thereby supporting the author’s own work.
To address the research questions, a thorough examination of existing literature encompassing product management, agile methodologies, and key concepts contributing to product success - Vision, Value, and Validation, was conducted. In tandem with the literature review, data was meticulously gathered and analysed from nine interviews, a maturity assessment of the author's team, and the author's own first-hand observations. Using thematic analysis, the interview data were analysed, and the resulting insights were reported as key findings in relation to the theoretical framework and research questions.
The culmination of this thesis is a set of practical recommendations derived from best practices observed in mature product teams and the common challenges faced by many teams. These tailored recommendations serve as a guideline for the author's personal development, leveraging her role as a Product Owner to guide her product team towards an agile and value-oriented mind-set. This research not only contributes to the author's professional growth but also offers actionable strategies for fostering organisational agility and value delivery.
