Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this thesis was to gain a better understanding of refurbishment projects on cruise vessels. This thesis was written for the Finnish company Kaefer Oy which executes these kinds of refurbishment projects for cruise liner companies around the world. This thesis specifically focused on two research objectives. The first objective was to create a schematic representation of the main processes within the Project Life Cycle (PLC) of refurbishment projects executed by Kaefer Oy. The second objective was to find Key Performance Indicators that could be used during these projects.
Qualitative research methods have been used to gather and analyse the data for this research. The data was collected by doing interviews and by having meetings with industry representatives within the company. The meetings were held in two rounds. The first round of meetings was held to gain a basic understanding of the processes and Project Life Cycles of refurbishment projects. Subsequently, the interviews were held to gain in-depth knowledge of the processes within refurbishment projects and as a starting point for the development of the Key Performance Indicators. Thereafter, the second round of meetings was held to further develop the Key Performance Indicators.
The theoretical background gathered for this thesis provided a solid base for creating the intended results. The results of this thesis included a cross-functional flowchart showcasing the project phases and the main processes within the Project Life Cycle of refurbishment projects executed by Kaefer Oy. The other results of this thesis were four Key Performance Indicators that are connected to the company its strategy.
