The aim of this thesis is to investigate the impact of social media on eating disorders in adolescents. The research is based on the question: How does social media affect eating disorders in adolescents/young adults? The author has chosen to use a qualitative method where eight blogs have been collected as material. The blogs are written by women who discuss about social media's negative and positive viewpoints on eating disorders. The material from the blogs has been analyzed using a qualitative content analysis. As a theoretical basis, the author used Katie Eriksson's theory of suffering.
The author was able to divide the results into two main themes, one of which addresses negative aspects and the other deals with support that has a positive impact. The women pointed out how social media can affect eating disorders both negatively and positively. In the results, there were more negative points of view than positive ones. The negative perspectives were how social media can trigger an eating disorder or how it can worsen. The women discussed how comparisons to others on social media can create an unhealthy mindset about their own body. Normalization of eating disorder behaviors, such as various trends, can also have a negative impact on adolescents. The positive aspects resulted in how women can find support for recovery from an eating disorder. Body positivity was also presented as a positive perspective.
