Tiivistelmä
This thesis was an assignment commenced by NauticAi Ltd. They are the manufacturer of the electronic ship´s logbook that was the main subject of this thesis. The idea of this thesis was introduced by the authors, and approved by captain Henrik Ramm-Schmidt, CEO of NauticAi Ltd.
The purpose of this thesis was to familiarize ourselves with the regulations and requirements of electronic logbooks, with the demarcation of Finnish flagged vessels. Finnish maritime regulatory, and international regulatory requirements on ships’ logbooks and electronic logbooks were summarized in this thesis. The process of implementing the use of the nauticAi Log on board a Finnish flagged ship was explained, and the results of a survey on how the ship’s deck/engine officers have experienced the use of nauticAi Log were presented. A user manual for effectively utilizing the nauticAi Log was also created.
Mixed methods were used in the research with both a qualitative and a quantitative approach. Data gathering, interviews, questionnaires, and benchmarking were conducted. Interviews with persons involved in the implementation of the nauticAi Log on board the two vessels which have had the nauticAi log for the longest time. To help understand some of the implementations of the Finnish laws and regulations, Tuomas Kokoi, Special Adviser at Traficom, was interviewed. Captain Henrik Ramm-Schmidt, CEO of NauticAi Ltd, was interviewed regarding technical and other details regarding the nauticAi Log. To find out how many Finnish flagged ships were using electronic logbooks or planning to start using electronic logbooks, the authors sent questions to all Finnish shipping companies listed on the Finnish Shipowners Association website.
The results found in this thesis were that this subject is highly topical, as many Finnish shipping companies are considering or are already testing some brand of electronic logbooks. The results also find that the majority of the users of the nauticAi Log would recommend it to other Finnish flagged ships considering changing from paper to electronic logbooks, and that the implementation process can be rough for the ship’s crew and takes about six months.
