Integrating journaling as part of the acupuncture patient journey
can potentially improve patient engagement and adherence. Guided by service design principles and Traditional Chinese Medicine, this action-based thesis aimed to develop and implement such a journaling method for enhanced patient acupuncturist collaboration and understanding of contributing lifestyle factors to health and well-being.
Qualitative research methods were employed in designing the journaling method within the process including real-life patient experiences. Participatory design and in-depth qualitative interviews informed the co-creating of the journaling method. The patient experience data provided indicative insight into what content should be emphasized and guided the ideal placement of the journaling method in the patient journey map. The data additionally supported decision-making regarding whether to include digital components in the journaling method.
The action-based thesis produced the first version of the journaling method that will be employed in the commissioning company’s treatment plans beginning in summer of 2024. The data analysis from the research showed that the journaling method could significantly enhance patient engagement by making the healing process more tangible and integrated into daily routines. It was also highlighted that maintaining ethical standards and awareness of personal biases while conducting research within one’s own company is crucial for reliable results. The journaling method developed not only increases the value of the services provided by the commissioner by enhancing patient outcomes but also contributes to the field of healthcare by providing a model for patient-centered, co-creative treatment tools.
