The role of nurses in palliative care

Abstract

This thesis is beneficial for the readers to get to know more about palliative care, to investi-gate the challenges and opportunities of nurses providing palliative care, with an emphasis on their communication skills, pain management strategies, ethical consideration, and over-all contributions to patient care. The aim of the topic is to understand how nurses play a crucial role in providing and participating in palliative care, assuring patients and families receive comprehensive support. The purpose of the topic is to improve the level of care and raise awareness of the role that nurses play in palliative care. The research question that the thesis addressed was: What challenges do nurses face in palliative care? The research method for this thesis is qualitative research including inductive content analysis. A total number of eleven (11) articles were used for content analysis.

The upper category results for this thesis are enhancement of palliative care outcomes, nursing support and patient-centered care. The conclusion of the thesis is to find out how the nurses contribute to the process of a dying patient, points out the most important as-pects in how they communicate emotions, clarifies the complex difficulties and tasks that nurses play in the provision of palliative care.
