Tiivistelmä
Student exchange programs allow students to attend a partner university in another country. While the idea of studying abroad can be both thrilling and intimidating, it offers the chance to immerse yourself in a new culture, step out of your comfort zone, make new friends, and develop as a person.
Self-Determination Theory (SDT) is a theory of personal development and human behaviour, and it has been developing gradually for the last 40 years and becoming a significant theory of human motivation. The theory was developed by Edward L. Deci and Richard M. Ryan. The theory’s analysis concentrates mainly on the psychological level and separates the different types of motivation from composed to autonomous. By applying the Self-Determination Theory, this thesis identifies a strategy to enhance students’ motivation and well-being during their exchange process.
The purpose of this thesis is to relieve the Students Mobility Services workload at Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK). The outcome is a compiled student handbook for TAMK students considering an exchange period in the Republic of Korea. The student handbook can be used as a template for other exchange destinations. The handbook is shared with the TAMK Student Mobility Services, and they have been given access to download and modify the handbook. The data for the handbook was collected by sending out an online survey to TAMK students who have done their exchange period in the Republic of Korea between the years 2021 and 2024.
The online survey results indicate that there were multiple topics the respondents found difficult and needed more guidance on during the exchange process. The most voted topics the respondents felt they needed more guidance on were consulate services, travel notification to the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and vaccinations. The finished handbook gives guidance on these topics.
