Tiivistelmä
The aim of the thesis was to explore the consolidation possibilities for the
shipments made by the commissioner’s Finnish units and the related potential
of cost savings. The objective was to determine the common customers of the
Finnish units, define the reconsolidation of their shipments, and establish a
method for the recalculation of transportation costs on a country-specific basis
using an example customer. In the reconsolidation process, an external third party
warehouse with which the commissioner already cooperates was utilized.
In this study, quantitative research method was primarily used. The study was
conducted by examining and analyzing data collected from the commissioner’s
enterprise resource planning system over one calendar year.
When analyzing the results of the study, it became evident that there were
many common customers between the commissioner’s Finnish units, and
thus, consolidation potential had been underutilized. Cost savings could have
been achieved, especially with customers whose shipments had a lower average
weight.
The outcome of this thesis was a proposal for the commissioner concerning a
new operating model that could be piloted in one specifically chosen country.
Due to the scope of the topic, the results are not conclusive, and the analysis
partially relied on assumptions. As a potential avenue for further research, a
more thorough analysis focusing on a more precisely specified subject, such
as one country and its customer pool regarding the consolidation potential, is
suggested.
