Dementia, which is currently the seventh leading cause of death and one of the major causes of disability and dependency among the aging populations globally, is a major issue that is being highly aware by healthcare sectors that strive to safeguard and maintain the quality of life of dementia person experiencing memory degradation.
The aim of the study was to critically analyze studies focusing on nurses’ experiences of utilizing music-incorporated interventions as strategies in dementia care and to synthesize the findings. The purpose was to increase the awareness, knowledge and understanding of how music-incorporated interven-tions can be included in dementia care and to contribute to framing future discussions and interventions which support the practicability and sustainability of non-pharmacological music-based interven-tions in dementia care.
The study was implemented as a literature review. The data was collected from two online academic databases including CINAHL Ultimate (EBSCOhost) and ProQuest Central. Based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, seven peer-reviewed studies conducted in English between 2012 and 2024 were analyzed using content analysis.
The analysis and synthesis were organized in two main categories: applying music in specific Activities of Daily Livings (ADLs) routine and applying music in different dementia care settings including Residential Aged Care (RAC) homes, hospital (acute ward) and online platform (in face of COVID pandemic). Positive experiences and supportive responses from healthcare staff including nurses were drawn out regarding the implementation of music-incorporated interventions for dementia patients.
This study could be utilized by healthcare sector to grab a glimpse on nurses’ experiences developed from applying music in different situations or settings in dementia care. Challenges and room for improvement for implementing music interventions in different settings could also be recognized, in which the healthcare field should concern more and further research is needed.
