Tiivistelmä
In order to guarantee the safe running of a vessel, turning over a nautical watch at sea is a crucial activity that demands precise attention. The handover procedure is a key time when the new watchkeeper assumes control of the ship's and its crew's safety. The procedure includes the exchange of information, confirmation of the position of the vessel, and evaluation of the vessel's condition. Clear communication, efficient navigational instrument utilization, and thorough comprehension of the operational procedures of the vessel are all necessary for the handover process.
The significance of the handover process and the variables that may affect its efficacy are examined in this thesis. It looks at the crucial steps in the handover procedure as well as the difficulties watchkeepers confront throughout this crucial operation. The thesis also discusses the optimal techniques for a smooth handover and evaluates the body of previous research on navigational watchkeeping.
This thesis combined a literature analysis with interviews of watchkeepers as its research approach. The results show that for the safety of the ship and its crew, a smooth handover procedure is crucial. The dangers connected with the handover procedure can be reduced with the use of modern navigational technology, effective communication, and a clear grasp of vessel operating protocols.

The best practices for the handover method are suggested as a last step in this thesis, including the implementation of standardized processes, the use of new technology, and continuous watchkeeper training and instruction. These suggestions can help to improve marine vessel safety and lower the dangers of nautical watchkeeping.
