Tiivistelmä
Almost 200,000 athletics scholarships are available to NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) universities annually in the United States. The ultimate goal of providing these scholarships is to assemble championship-winning individuals and teams and for some elite talent to progress to the professional ranks of their sport. Balancing the demands of academics and athletics can be difficult for many student-athletes during their university years. Increased pressure on coaches, an extremely active transfer portal, and the perceptions and effects of NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) have all added to an evolving college sports landscape.

With soft skills becoming increasingly critical throughout education and into the job market, are the 98% of student-athletes who do not become professional in their sport developing a skill set that adequately prepares them for life after university?

This study identifies current trends in the student-athlete journey in the United States by employing a thematic analysis of eight semi-structured interviews with leading coaches and field experts. The study also determines the extent to which soft skills are explicitly planned for and taught to student-athletes.

The results present three overarching themes, including challenges in the recruitment and transition period, parental and external influence, and the cultural and structural issues in the planning and development of soft skills. This nuanced scenario, which reflects recent changes, presents practical recommendations for future approaches and the development of university programs.
