The term 'startup,' referring to early-stage ventures with scalable yet still-developing business models, has become widely recognized and increasingly important around the world. Despite the recognized importance of startups and the well-developed infrastructures in South Korea and Finland, there is limited research comparing the ecosystems of the two startup worlds. With this regard, this thesis aims to delve into an ecosystem of people, startups, and organizations by exploring the motivations, perceptions, and working environments of individuals.
A qualitative research method was used to identify the key similarities and differences between the two ecosystems in a comparative context. The interviewees were five Korean and five Finnish citizens with relevant experience in the startup ecosystem. The data was analyzed using content analysis. In both countries, startups are often associated with risk and failure, and there is a general preference for stability and security over the uncertainties of entrepreneurship. The main difference is that Koreans in startups find satisfaction in avoiding bureaucracy and appreciate government support, while Finns value meaningful work ownership and prefer less government intervention.
A suggested improvement for future research is to focus on the support structures within startup ecosystems, using quantitative research methods to gather comprehensive data.
