Tiivistelmä
The purpose and intention of the study was to provide up to date information about a cardiac condition called takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM). The information gives a sight to healthcare professionals about what is TCM, how is it treated, and what is included in the nursing care process.
A descriptive qualitative literature review was conducted to find ten scientific articles, to use as sources for this thesis. Articles were searched through several databases, and the final scientific articles were all found from CINAHL Complete database. From all the articles that were found, ten were chosen which answered the research question best. The articles include scientific studies, journals, and case studies. The articles were written in English or Finnish language, included all genders, and the timeline of the publications were between 2010 and 2024.
The findings indicate that TCM symptoms could also be symptoms of myocardial infarction (MI), therefore, it is crucial to differentiate them. It is important to recognise whether the symptoms indicate TCM, MI, or something else, for the correct treatment. For nurses, it is crucial to take electrocardiography (ECG) as soon as possible, if there are any cardiac symptoms or dyspnoea to know the activity of the heart. The main care for the TCM is medication therapy, following patients’ hemodynamic status and overall well-being, and psychological support. Followup nursing care includes the patient’s medication intake, following cardiac function, lifestyle, giving the patient support and education about reducing the stressors in life.
More research is needed to be done, to have a better understanding of TCM and its care. There are no current guidelines for the treatment, which makes treating TCM even more difficult. Healthcare must improve in order for TCM patients to receive better and more holistic care. This includes more education amongst professionals.
