Tiivistelmä
This study is commissioned by Platform6 / Tampere Startup Hub Oy to support research being conducted on startups and the success factors related to their growth. This thesis explores the role of Team Cognition in an entrepreneurial setting, focusing on learning how team-level cognitive processes demonstrate and how they impact teams’ operations. Concepts such as Shared Mental Models (SMM), Transactive Memory Systems (TMS), and Interactive Team Cognition (ITC) encompass the authors in this process.
A qualitative research methodology is employed in this thesis, utilizing semi-structured interviews to understand how members of three different startups experience Team Cognition, and how it may impact their team’s functionality. Through the interviews, the authors were able to gain data on how and if the core concepts of Team Cognition emerge in the teams. By connecting this data to the existing theoretical body around the topic, the authors could make insightful conclusions on the relationship between Team Cognition and the factors impacting the team’s performance, such as role alignment and clarity’s enhancing effect on the team's adaptation and performance.
By bridging theoretical frameworks with practical applications, this thesis strives to contribute to a comprehensive understanding of Team Cognition’s effect on teams in an entrepreneurial setting, offering actionable insights for startups, eco-systems, and coaches interested in fostering more effective and resilient teams.
