The aim of the thesis is to illustrate young adults' experiences of the sex education they received at school, and to find out whether the education was comprehensive enough to promote their sexual health. When it comes to sexual health, the study focuses mainly on views on sex and sexual behaviors. The study was based on two questions: 1) What are young adults' experiences of the sex education they have received in school? and 2) How has sex education affected young adults' sexual health? Nola J. Pender's Health Promotion Model was used as the theoretical basis for the study.
In the background, topics such as sexual health, sexuality, sexual rights, sexual communication, consent, and sex education in Finland are discussed. This is done, among other things, to provide the reader with theoretical knowledge on the subject.
The method used was a qualitative interview study. 4 people between 21-24 years participated as informants in the study. The interview was semi-structured and consisted of 16 open questions related to sex education and sexual health. The interviews were recorded and then transcribed and analyzed. Main categories and subcategories were created based on the informants’ quotes.
The results of the study show that all informants experienced sex education as deficient in some way. Important topics such as sexual pleasure and sexual communication are missing from the curriculum. This has led to problems with young adults' sexual health. These problems included difficulties in communicating in sexual situations and problems with sexual pleasure. Most of the informants felt that these problems could have been avoided if these topics were discussed more in sex education at school.
