Tiivistelmä
Due to emerging trends in the hotel sector, such as solo travel, sustainability and budget travel, capsule hotels are becoming increasingly popular worldwide. These Japanese properties offer multiple sleeping capsules the size of a bed in a small area. This budget-friendly accommoda tion with limited amenities contrasts with the offerings of standard hotels.
Currently, Helsinki has several sleeping capsules called GoSleep, located in the departure area of Vantaa Airport, available exclusively to air travellers. However, there are no capsule hotels in Helsinki offering affordable accommodation for followers of these trends. According to statistics, the number of overnight stays in Finland has increased. For example, the number of overnight stays of tourists was 25% higher in February 2023 than in 2022 (Statistics Finland, March 2023). On the other hand, the average price per night in Uusimaa is as much as 102.6 euros (J. Clausnitzer, 2022). In connection with this, the author sees the potential for implementing a cap sule hotel in Helsinki.
This thesis presents a study on the potential and feasibility of implementing a capsule hotel con cept in Helsinki. The study uses an empirical and quantitative method including a survey. The results contain identifying potential competitors and analyzing their offers, as well as identifying possible problems that a potential capsule hotel may experience. The survey examines, among other things, demand, traveller preferences, their experience and awareness of the concept.
