Tiivistelmä
The goal of this thesis was to research the most popular wellness tourism activities and destinations within China, as well as to understand why they are so popular.

The main research question is: “What are the primary motivations and preferences of domestic wellness tourists in China?” The sub-research questions are the following: “What are the most popular attractions in wellness tourism for domestic travellers in China?”, “What factors are most significant for Chinese domestic travellers when choosing a wellness tourism destination in China?”, and “What kind of travel plans do Chinese wellness tourists have in the domestic market?” The study focuses exclusively on domestic tourists in China, excluding international tourists to narrow down the scope.

The theoretical background concentrates on the wellness tourism, especially in China. China is a country situated in the eastern part of the Asian continent and is divided into 23 provinces, 5 autonomous regions, 2 special administrative regions, and 4 centrally administered municipalities. It offers wide variety of destinations for domestic travelling. Wellness tourism refers to traveling with the goal of maintaining or improving one's health and well-being, and it can be categorized into two main types: medical tourism and wellness tourism. Additionally, the thesis briefly covers the topic of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has generally been regarded as an integral aspect of wellness activities. It is well-suited for managing long-term conditions and emphasizes natural therapies and holistic regulation.

This thesis is research oriented, and the quantitative survey was used as a method for data gathering. The Webropol tool was utilized to collect responses, which were then analysed using some quantitative, basic methods. The survey was conducted 17th-31st of October 2024 and received a total of 221 responses.

The findings provided insights into the preferences and motivational factors of Chinese wellness tourists. For example, their preferred trip duration was 4-7 days, and an average budget was 3501-5000 RMB. The most popular destinations were southern locations such as Hainan and Yunnan provinces. The results indicated that domestic wellness tourists prioritize not only the improvement of physical and mental health when selecting a vacation spot but also value the natural and cultural allure of the location. Based on these research findings, travel agencies can design customized wellness packages that align with the preferences of Chinese domestic tourists.
