Oral health is directly linked to overall health, and poor oral hygiene can exacerbate many chronic diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease. Therefore, it is important for nurses to recognize oral health disorders as part of comprehensive patient care.
This project aims to create an educational video for SAMK nursing students, demonstrating effective techniques and methods for oral care, focusing on both children and elderly individuals. The object for this project is to enhance the skills and knowledge of nursing students in oral health care. The goal is to promote and improve the overall health and well-being of the clients/patients cared for. Recognizing the unique challenges posed by these demographics, the tutorial will offer practical insights and evidence-based approaches to ensure optimal oral hygiene practices.
Key focus areas included the impact of age-related factors on oral health in the elderly, such as compromised motor skills and cognitive decline. The video provides comprehensive guidance on administering oral hygiene to elderly patients, emphasizing effective methods for cleaning both natural teeth and prosthetics and for children the video lay emphasis on the importance of oral hygiene, dental diseases in children, and nutrition. Furthermore, it tackles oral hygiene according to ages and the challenges nurses encounter when implementing oral hygiene practices in children. Most importantly it provides effective techniques for ensuring proper oral care. The study also explores the role of caregivers in maintaining oral health for both demographics.
