Tiivistelmä
This report aims to study the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on India’s tourism sector. The main purpose of this thesis is to find the specific effects of the pandemic on the tourism sector in India. The investigation will also include an analysis of the challenges encountered by different stakeholders, such as tour operators, hotels, and government bodies, as well as strategic recovery approaches. Based on theoretical frameworks and empirical data, this research aims to provide significant insights into the long-term consequences of the pandemic on India's tourism sector.

COVID-19 and its effects on Indian tourism had a great impact on economic constraints and travel limitations. The lockdown led to a 49.1% decline in GDP, resulting in a huge drop in hotel booking and foreign ex earnings. Significantly problems included migrant workers losing their jobs, business closures, and flights being cancelled. To regain tourist and travel Government officials opted for new techniques such as tax relief to locals, Swadesh Darshan, E-visa extension, and investment in infrastructure and heritage sites.

Based on 3 case studies I have examined the situation of the Taj Mahal financial hit due to the COVID shutdown has cost the city approximately 50 billion Indian Rupees ($685 million, €563 million), the city Goa has a major financial loss of estimated INR 2,000 crore to INR 7,200 crore in damages to the sector, and the Himalayan region show how iconic sites experienced drop in revenue and tourist arrival during the had phase time.

This thesis highlights the key findings and conclusion, focusing on the significant impact of COVID-19 on the Indian Tourism Sector. The downturn in visitors’ arrival and the virtual halt of Domestic and International have hit businesses that depend on tourism hard. The sector saw a sharp decline in the year 2020, where the estimated loss in revenue was Rs 1.25 trillion due to regulations that resulted in the shutting of hotels, delays, and a complete halt to tourism. Employment was heavily impacted by job cuts and reduced working hours, leading to widespread unemployment during such a phase. According to KPMG, 38 million jobs were thought to have been lost during the height of the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020. Moreover, the decline in hotel occupancy rates puts pressure on the lodging industry's bottom line. Despite these challenges, government programs including financial aid with tax reduction, travel promotion campaigns, and precautions helped to remove these adverse consequences. Recovery strategies including digital transformation and safety protocols, are essential for rebuilding resilience and ensuring long-term recovery for the sector.
