The Indian legal system though one of the most extensive ones has always been based on manual work. Merely shifting the manual records to the computers had proven to be an almost impossible task and had taken humongous effort and time to achieve. The system has been wrought by delays and backlog of cases due to these very reasons. Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology in the legal field will ensure better research facilities, accuracy and efficiency. This study aimed to analyse the extent to which AI technology is used in the legal field and what benefits and challenges is poses. The study highlights the benefits of using AI technology such as increase in efficiency and accuracy but also considers the potential challenges such as privacy concerns and ethical implications.
The study also focused on what can enable better use of AI technology in the legal field and what kind of changes are required to make it more effective so that it can deal with the huge amount of the cases to be decided thus reducing the backlog of cases. The theoretical part focused on the background working of Indian legal system and the current extent of use AI technology in the field. It discusses the various tools that are available and that are being used in the legal field.
The study aimed to apply qualitative as well as quantitative methods of data collection from lawyers, judges and professionals working in this field in India. This was done with questionnaires and open-ended questions interviews. However, the interviews were conducted through the questionnaire itself by including the opportunity to give detailed responses in the open ended questions.
The results include the responses given by the participants as well as responses from ChatGPT. Both the results were compared to get a more detailed view of the utility and challenges of using AI tools in the legal field. The results reflected the views expressed in the data collection and pinpoint the problems arising in fully utilizing the AI technology. The findings focused on solutions to improve the adaptability to this new technology which has the potential to transform the operation of legal services in India.
