Tiivistelmä
This thesis explores the development process of an interactive prototype of a 3D map application using web-based design tool Spline. The thesis aims to study how visitor engagement can be enhanced by transitioning from traditional static experiences to interactive experiences, where the visitors are encouraged to explore and immerse themselves into the topic by themselves.

The theoretical part of the research was conducted through literature reviews on user experience design, interaction design, user engagement, and immersion. The research helped to identify the key principles that can be applied to the design process of interactive exhibits. These principles were used as a guideline for the development of the 3D map prototype.

The practical part of the thesis focused on concepting and building the prototype by creating 3D models using Blender and importing them into Spline environment. The design process followed the key principles defined in the research part, focusing on enhancing the engagement and user-friendliness of the application.

The results show that Spline offers a lot of possibilities for new kinds of interactive 3D applications without the need for coding. The prototype demonstrates that while Spline is great for creating low-fidelity models and experiences, it has its limitations when handling larger high-polygon environments, as well as advanced camera controls. Despite these challenges, the research proves that combination of Spline and Blender can be a viable approach for creating engaging interactive experiences. Future development possibilities could focus on performance optimization and alternative file formats for imported 3D models.
