Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this thesis was to showcase the adjustments an animated TV series for children requires to be accurately produced in Easy Finnish. The concept for the series was created at Tampere University of Applied Sciences as a part of the author’s animation minor in 2022. The Finnish broadcasting company, Yle, expressed interest in the final concept idea and agreed to produce the series in 2023 provided it was adapted into Easy Finnish.
The theoretical part of the thesis is described in the second chapter, where Easy Finnish and its purpose are defined. The guidelines for producing various types of Easy Finnish content, such as texts, images and videos are also compiled and individually explained. Additionally, a comparison was conducted to examine the differences between easy and plain language. Children as a target audience for animated content was also addressed.
The series’ adaptation into Easy Finnish was mainly accomplished by the input from Selkokeskus, The Finnish Centre for Easy Language. A professional interpreter was present during the process of scriptwriting and with her help ten scripts were accurately written in Easy Finnish. In addition, after most of the preliminary episodes were evaluated, it was confirmed the series would be granted a SELKO symbol when the mandatory alterations were made. The gathered research acted to justify the reasoning behind the modifications that were not initially suggested by Selkokeskus.
To conclude the thesis, a profound discussion was compiled to reflect upon the suggested Easy Finnish adjustments. As the production of the animated TV series also had its drawbacks, there are suggestions for improvement. In addition, the possible future of a new genre for animated TV series in Easy Finnish was considered and encouraged.
