Tiivistelmä
This thesis explores the potential of using solar energy to power households entirely in regions near polar latitudes, with a focus on case studies in Latvia and Finland. By analyzing the energy consumption patterns of typical household appliances and examining solar irradiance data, the research aims to provide homeowners with insights into how to effectively utilize available sunlight on their property. The findings underscore the significance of optimizing solar panel placement and angles to maximize energy capture throughout the year, especially in challenging winter conditions.

A key achievement of this research is the identification of strategies that enable homeowners to understand and manage their energy consumption more effectively. By recognizing which devices consume the most energy and how their usage can be adjusted, homeowners can significantly reduce their overall electricity demands. The study emphasizes the importance of leveraging all available roof and wall areas for solar panel installations, enabling better energy generation potential and making solar energy a viable option for a wider range of households.

The research shows that solar energy systems offer valuable energy independence, particularly in isolated locations, where extending traditional utility infrastructure would require significant land disruption. Solar panels, when optimized for local conditions, can provide reliable power throughout the year, even in climates with low winter sunlight. By focusing on sunlight utilization and energy-efficient appliances, solar systems reduce reliance on traditional grids, minimize environmental impact, and align with Europe's sustainability goals. Solar setups can be adapted over time, offering both environmental and financial benefits.
