The artistic sports have been progressing tremendously in the modern world. Technical difficulty together with artistry have become more and more demanding. The sport of Ice Dance is developing and growing its popularity in Finland and all over the world. Since there is no previous sport analysis made in Ice Dance in Finland, this thesis is important and needed in the development of the sport in the country. Aim of this thesis is to discover deeper understanding in Ice Dance specific knowledge, while providing support and information for the education of coaches and athletes in the sport.
This thesis is product-based thesis. The product of the thesis is the Sport Analysis in Ice Dance, which is the first of its kind in Finland. Also, universally studies in Ice Dance are not common. The framework of this sports analysis presents history and competition requirements of Ice Dance, and the physical qualities needed to become a top-level ice dancer.
The sport analysis consists additionally of two athlete profiles of successful ice dancers. The profiles of one male Ice Dancer and one female Ice Dancer demonstrate their physical qualities during their skating career together. The profiles are completed with an example of the physical testing methods and the interview with the well-known athletic coach, Mirco Botta.
As a result, the first sport analysis in Ice Dance was created. The analysis covered the physical qualities required in the sports and demonstrated the qualities of top-level ice dancers together with the physical testing example. The results of the thesis supported the knowledge that Ice Dance is demanding sport with high heart rates and lactate levels.
This analysis was approached from the perspective of purely physical qualities. In the future the knowledge base of this thesis can be complemented for example, with psychological qualities needed, differences between Solo Dance and Ice Dance, or the artistic and musical aspects of the sport.
