Tiivistelmä
Abstract:
Objectives: - this thesis is to identify essential nursing competencies for caring for suicidal patients and to understand the challenges that nurses encounter in providing effective care. Specifically, the study seeks to answer the question: What competencies are necessary for nurses to effectively care for suicidal patients in today’s healthcare environment?
Introduction: - Suicide is a significant public health concern that affects individuals, families, and communities globally. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2023), around 800,000 people die by suicide each year, underscoring the urgent need for improved prevention and care strategies. This thesis focuses on nursing competencies essential to the care of suicidal patients, aiming to enhance nurses' understanding of risk assessment, preventive practices, and standardized methods in care.
Inclusion and exclusion criteria: -includes peer-reviewed articles and research from the last ten years that focus on suicide prevention, nursing competencies, and clinical practices specific to the care of suicidal patients. Studies addressing general mental health nursing competencies without specific mention of suicide risk assessment or care are excluded. Application of inclusion and exclusion criteria narrowed the selection to 11 relevant articles.
Method: - This literature review used a qualitative, inductive approach to gather and analysed data related to the research question (Bandara et al., 2015). Topic-specific search phrases initially yielded multiple articles, which were refined through repeated readings and advanced search techniques.
Findings: - underscore the importance of thorough suicide risk assessment, preventive measures, and adherence to standardized practices in suicide care. Enhanced training and resources are urgently needed to support nurses. The Interpersonal Theory of Suicide provides a valuable framework for strengthening nursing competencies by addressing psychological factors in suicidal ideation and fostering effective patient engagement. (Joiner, 2005)
Conclusion- The study reveals gaps in current nursing competencies, reinforcing the importance of specialized training in suicide prevention and care. This research provides valuable insights for healthcare providers, policymakers, and educators to enhance nursing education and practice. By addressing these competency gaps, the study aims to contribute to improved quality of care and better outcomes for patients at risk of suicide.
