The purpose of this thesis is to examine the current state and development areas of procurement related to aquaculture in the Lake Victoria coastal region of Kenya. The thesis is commissioned by the Transport and Logistics Research Group of Turku University of Applied Sciences. The research group is currently conducting the AQUADEVBUS project in Kenya, which is investigating the development of aquaculture-related education in Kenya.
The objective of this thesis is to provide development suggestions for improving procurement based on the data collected. The results and suggestions can be utilized in the ongoing AQUADEVBUS project and in a potential follow-up application, where the emphasis would be more on logistics and procurement.
The key theoretical framework of the thesis includes aquaculture, procurement, supplier relationships, and cost management. In the research sections, data collection was carried out using a survey, which was answered by various stakeholders in aquaculture. The survey was carried out on-site in Kenya, with additional responses received electronically afterward. Based on the collected data, the main development areas identified were total cost management and the establishment of supplier contracts.
