Depression is a mental disorder that lowers the mood of a person over a long period and also affects their thoughts, feelings, and behavior, making it difficult to cope with daily activities. The prevalence of depression in Finland is currently 5% of the global rate, especially among adolescents.
The purpose of this study was to describe the external factors leading to depression in adolescents (12 - 21 years old). The aim was to raise awareness of the condition and find the factors to avoid the risk of developing this disease. Similarly, the aim was to promote better mental health of adolescents. The thesis sought answers to the question: How do external factors impact depression in adolescents? The study was conducted as a literature review, with data collected from electronic databases, and inductive content analysis was utilized in the data analysis process.
The study showed that the main external factors affecting depression in adolescents were: victimization and harassment, academic environment, family environment, addictions, diseases, and stress.
