Marine Scrubbers - Their Use In The Maritime Industry

Abstract

This thesis will cover and explain Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS) use, looking at crew knowledge and opinions about these essential systems. These systems aim to reduce the environmental impact of shipping globally and are mandated for vessels using certain fuels. The use of scrubbers is a significant development in the maritime industry, especially in the Baltic Sea, as it not only helps reduce the environmental impact of dirty marine fuels but also ensures compliance with global environmental regulations. This thesis will also look at their implementation in the maritime environment, the history of their development, their current use, and how they can both positively and negatively affect the environment. The knowledge and opinions of the crews who use the systems will also be gathered via two methods. Data gathering will be done by way of a questionnaire and interviews. The answers and results collected will not only help explain the crew's knowledge and opinion of scrubbers onboard the vessels on which they work but also underscore the crucial role they play in the maritime industry. The questionnaire and interviews were done anonymously. Only the rank of the crew members who responded to the questionnaire is visible. The material used for this thesis included manuals and technical information supplied by various companies including Langh Tech, Valmet, and Wärtsilä. The Commercial Director of Langh Tech, Laura Langh-Lagerlöf, also agreed to a phone interview which was recorded, with permission.
