Tiivistelmä
This thesis examines energy efficiency practices in the railway services of Finland and Slovakia, focusing on both passenger and cargo sectors. The study aims to identify critical differences and challenges in each country’s approach to sustainable rail transport. The thesis also explores the benefits and challenges of sustainable transportation, especially in the railway sector.
This thesis was written by relying on the main research question “What are the energy efficiency practices of Finnish and Slovak railways, and what are the lessons shared and to be explored?”
The analysis aims to compare the energy efficiency practices in Finnish and Slovak railways, identify key differences, and evaluate the implications of these practices for sustainability and operational efficiency.
By using a qualitative research approach, the study gathers insights from company reports, EU policies, and reports and from VR Group in Finland and ZSSK in Slovakia. The key concepts include energy efficiency, sustainability in railways, and policy impacts.
