This study examines tacit knowledge transfer in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), focusing on the methods, barriers, and strategies for effective tacit knowledge transfer. Through a systematic literature review, the author identifies vital obstacles to tacit knowledge transfer in SMEs, including trust, language, communication, cultural differences, time constraints, employee turnover, lack of motivation, and unwillingness to share.
This study highlights the complex nature of tacit knowledge, which is deeply personal, context-specific, and difficult to articulate. The findings reveal that successful tacit knowledge transfer in SMEs relies on approaches that balance informal strengths with formal structure and technological support. These key strategies include creating a knowledge-friendly culture and developing structured mentorship programs. This study explains how open knowledge transfer can lead to innovative approaches that enhance tacit knowledge transfer in SMEs. It examines how practices like internalization and combination help in collaboration with external partners, innovation, and customer engagement can help SMEs access, absorb, and utilize tacit knowledge outside their environment.
The research contributes a comprehensive framework integrating insights from knowledge management, open innovation, and SME literature to provide a holistic perspective on tacit knowledge dynamics in smaller firms. The study aims to develop practical strategies for small firms to enhance their ability to acquire, share, and leverage tacit knowledge for innovation and competitive advantage.
