Malnutrition is a serious issue in the elderly population, which has significantly affected the health and quality of life of the elderly residing in the elderly homes. Effective nursing management is crucial in preventing and addressing this challenge.
This study explores the roles of nursing management in preventing malnutrition and caring for under-nourished elderly patients in nursing homes. It aims to answer two key research questions: 1) What is the role of nursing management in preventing malnutrition in elderly homes? 2) What is the role of nursing in caring for undernourished elderly patients in these settings?
A scoping review of twelve peer-reviewed articles selected from EBSCohost CINAHL, PubMed and Google Scholar Database was conducted, focusing on nursing interventions and outcomes related to elderly malnutrition. The findings of this study underscores the importance of regular nutritional assessment and proper interventions according to the specific needs and preferences of elderly in the elderly homes.
The study underscores the necessity for ongoing training and education for nursing staff in the latest assessment tools and nutritional management strategies. Furthermore, the findings advocate for policy enhancements that support interdisciplinary collaboration in nursing homes to optimize nutritional care and overall health outcomes for the elderly residents.
