Tiivistelmä
Aim: This systematic literature review investigates the risk factors contributing to nurse burnout and evaluates strategies for its prevention. Guided by Christina Maslach’s Multidimensional Burnout Theory, which emphasizes the psychological, emotional, and professional challenges within high-stress environments like nursing, this study addresses two core questions: (1) What are the risk factors of nurse burnout? and (2) What strategies can mitigate burnout to enhance nurses’ well-being?
Method: To answer these questions, a comprehensive search was conducted across EBSCO, Academic Search Elite, CINAHL, PubMed, and Google Scholar, yielding an initial pool of 1,116 articles. Through the application of specific inclusion and exclusion criteria—focusing on peer-reviewed studies in English, published between 2014 and 2024, and with full-text availability—the final sample was narrowed to twelve articles, providing focused insights into burnout risk factors and interventions.
Findings: The findings revealed three main categories of nurse burnout risk factors: interpersonal dynamics, managerial and organizational factors, and professional challenges and sociodemographic strains, emphasizing the need for targeted systemic and interpersonal interventions. Effective preventive strategies include self-care and burnout prevention, social support interventions, and organizational intervention for burnout prevention. Moreover, the review highlights a gap in the research regarding cultural variations in burnout, recommending future studies to address how cultural factors influence burnout rates and responses to interventions.
Conclusion: The study supports a holistic, evidence-based approach to burnout prevention, emphasizing organizational support, individual resilience, and the need for culturally adaptable interventions. These findings have significant implications for nursing practice and management, suggesting that targeted policies and a supportive environment are essential in promoting nurse well-being and resilience.
