The recent global pandemic, COVID-19, had an impact on almost every industry worldwide. One of the most severely affected industry was sports tourism, which led to restrictions on tourists. To overcome these obstacles, the industry had to come up with as many new ideas and inventions as it could in order to revitalise itself. The first major mega-event post-pandemic was the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.
This study set out to evaluate the expectations and experiences of travellers who were taking their first trips after the pandemic outbreak. The research employed a qualitative methodology. In October 2024, data was gathered and compiled via online interviews. Twelve people in all, including both domestic and foreign visitors, were interviewed.
Consequently, the travellers' expectations and experiences were examined. Despite the possibility of quarantine, some were willing to participate in the experience, some were more willing to offer suggestions regarding the procedures for tests such as RT-PCR, and some would rather cancel the plans, stay at home, and observe in their comfort zone until the circumstances were favourable enough to travel unrestricted.
The findings of the study can be applied to both sports tourism and tourism, for instance, to comprehend the expectations of travellers and to advise event stakeholders on what to do in times of pandemic crisis.
