The story she tells: The challenges and possibilities Swedish female music producers face today

Abstract

This thesis focuses on how it is to work in Sweden as a female music producer. Five Swedish female music producers have been interviewed and shared their experiences, their way into the profession and their view of what they consider the challenges and the possibilities in their profession, as well as their experiences of education in music production. The result shows that these women are professional and sought-after music producers managing to make a living out of their work. It is common that clients come to them that have not been listened to, many times, by male producers and that their experiences as women help them in their profession when it comes to connecting with their clients. They also have experience of education in music production and have noticed that gender norms many times create hindrances for women in the business. One way of overcoming these hindrances is to be active in female separatist organizations and educations for music production, that can be good for helping women entering the business but might not bridge over to the general music industry.
