Tiivistelmä
The Physical interior product design industry is a historically important and substantial sector in the Finnish economy. Both institute graduates and independent designers are likely to try commercialising their designs at some point in their careers; however, establishing and managing an enterprise can pose major obstacles. Commissioner company Koje Oy sees the support and enablement of designers on the way to successful and profitable business operations in the physical product design market as a mission and strategic business development path.
This research aimed to study the reality and perspective of Finnish physical product designers to identify the main challenges and needs. Digital platforms appear to be an effective and profitable business model for addressing enablement missions. The objective was to provide the commissioner company with comprehensive advice on the most suitable platform architecture which serves the company’s goals and provides a strategic outlook for the commissioner’s future.
The real-world data was gathered through a mixed-method approach. Participant observations, literature review, and structured survey enabled this research to bring value and supply Koje Oy with insights into designers’ situations and the most suitable platform architectures. In addition, middle-term and long-term strategic choices were discussed.
Overall, the results showed that the main challenges and needs of designers in Finland are related to financial, emotional, educational, and social issues. To address those pains two platform architectures were developed. A two-sided platform for connecting Finnish designers and global audiences was outlined as a middle-term development strategy. A multisided platform architecture enabled by a value proposition-based ecosystem was proposed as a long-term goal.
