Mitigating challenges in technology projects : A case study in Nigeria

Abstract

Technology plays a vital role in the development of businesses, economies and countries therefore, ensuring the successful execution of technology projects is imperative. While technology covers a broad spectrum of different sectors, this study focused on the Information Technology sector. The aim of this study was to identify challenges in the execution of information technology projects in developing countries and propose solutions to mitigate these challenges using KUMS Construction Ltd. in Nigeria as a case study. The study employed the mixed method approach, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods where an interview was conducted with a representative of the case company and the qualitative data was collected using questionnaires on Microsoft forms which was completed by IT staff of the case company and other professionals in the IT sector.

The empirical findings suggested that challenges in IT projects include knowledge gap, exchange rate, lack of infrastructure, insecurity, government policies and regulations as well as inadequate investment in the Information technology sector. On this premise recommendations such as increased government interest and investment in IT, provision of the required infrastructure, adequate training and proper management skills be implemented to guarantee efficient project delivery.
