Background: Career advancement is essential for personal and professional growth. In Bangladesh, nurses are pivotal to healthcare but face challenges in career progression. There are limited chances for career advancement within the nursing field in Bangladesh. Advancing their careers enhances confidence, skills, and commitment, strengthening the healthcare system.
Purpose and aims: The purpose of this research was to gain a comprehensive understanding of the various factors that influence career advancement in the nursing profession within the context of Bangladesh. The aims were to explore the barriers and facilitators to career advancement in nursing profession of Bangladesh.
Methods: A total number of 12 registered nurses were interviewed in this qualitative research. The study participants` were recruited using snowball sampling technique. The data was collected through online interviews from 6th October to 12th November in 2024. The total number of data was 124 pages that was analysed using thematic analysis.
Results: The study identified main barriers and facilitators affecting nurses` career advancement. Barriers included structural barriers, organizational constraints, educational hindrances, social barriers, absence of pro activeness hinder the nurses` career advancement. In contrast, facilitators encompassed career readiness, motivation, structural initiatives, institutional provision, and family assistance that facilitate the career advancement for nurses`.
Conclusion: Addressing the barriers and facilitators in the nursing profession is crucial for enhancing nurses' professional growth and development in Bangladesh. Policymakers should focus on reforming the education system, implementing structured career pathways, and aligning job opportunities with nurses' qualifications and skills. These initiatives can empower nurses, improve career progression, and contribute to a more robust and effective healthcare system.
