This study examines the implementation of sustainable practices in luxury resorts in Sri Lanka's Southern Province and its role in promoting sustainable tourism. Using a mixed method approach combining surveys and interviews, this research investigates current sustainability initiatives, challenges and benefits of implementation, and how the implementation of these sustainable practices promotes sustainable tourism in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka economically, environmentally and socially.
Key findings indicate that luxury resorts have adopted various sustainable practices, particularly in terms of energy conservation, waste management, and water conservation. Stakeholders generally view these efforts positively, with the majority willing to pay a premium for sustainable accommodation. However, challenges such as high initial costs, limited government support and limited access to technology and resources remain. To promote long-term sustainability and sustainable tourism in the Southern Region this thesis suggests with recommendations for improving the adoption of sustainable practices in Luxury Resorts of the Southern Province of Sri Lanka.
