Intellectual disability and Autism Spectrum Disorder stand as the most prevalent developmental conditions encountered in humans. They impact approximately 3-5% of the populace and may coexist within an individual, thus adding complexity and challenges to treatment approaches. Nurses working with individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorder require specialized competencies to deliver effective, person-centered care. However, studies indicate that many nurses exhibit only a moderate level of competence in this area, highlighting the need for structured training and targeted support. Therefore, this project aimed to create a comprehensible guide for newly employed registered nurses working with people with intellectual disabilities and those on the autism spectrum.
The objective of the project was to enhance the orientation programme of Rinnekodit Tuulikannel. The project task was to compile simple and evidence-based guides for registered nurses providing care to persons with intellectual disabilities and those on the autism spectrum.
The project followed a structured methodology based on the waterfall project management model, ensuring a clear, sequential workflow. The project phases included idea initialization, where objective and target groups were identified, followed by planning, which involved defining the methodology, scheduling, and obtaining necessary permits. The implementation phase consisted of literature retrieval from reliable databases, content development, and structuring the orientation material based on best practices. The evaluation phase involved getting feedback from supervisors and project stakeholders to ensure the guide's accuracy and relevancy.
