This thesis sought to identify the risk factors contributing to the onset of dementia among the aging population. The aim of this thesis was to produce reliable information highlighting risk factors which predispose the aging population to the onset of dementia and subsequently identify ways of preventing occurrence of symptoms.
Data collection was conducted using descriptive systematic literature review of relevant peer reviewed articles from reliable databases. The data was analyzed qualitatively by identification of themes from the selected articles. The findings identified dementia risk factors ,such as excessive alcohol consumption, psychological distress, poor lung functioning, history of hypertension during pregnancy, social isolation, obesity, and extreme climatic conditions as the most prevalent causes of dementia among the elderly aged from 65 years. The suggestions made for further studies include; investigating the challenges experienced by health workers while caring for patients with dementia, identifying strategies for effective mitigation of dementia risk factors, identifying effective ways of controlling neurotoxins present in lakes and to find out the measures taken by World Health Organization (WHO) in supporting nations to reduce dementia risk factors globally.
