Hevosten nivelterveys : Nivelterveyteen vaikuttavat tekijät, hoitomuodot sekä niiden kustannukset

Abstract

Opinnäytetyöllä tavoiteltiin tuntemattomampien nivelterveyden hoitomuotojen esille tuontia. Niiden hyödyt sekä kustannukset olivat vertailussa tavallisempien hoitomuotojen kanssa. Opinnäytetyön taustalla sekä innoittajana toimi omakohtainen kokemus sekä kiinnostus aiheesta. Työstä käy ilmi erilaisten nivelterveyttä edistävien ja parantavien hoitojen hyödyt sekä haitat ja niiden karkeat kustannusarviot. Työssä keskityttiin myös eläinlääkärien ja eläinklinikoiden sekä arvo että markkinointilupauksiin sekä niiden puutteisiin. Työssä tutustutaan yleisellä tasolla hevosen kokonaisvaltaiseen terveyteen ja hyvinvointiin sekä miten näiden eri osa-alueet vaikuttavat hevosten nivelterveyteen. Tutkimustyö toteutettiin kyselytutkimuksena, jossa oli mukana niin laadullisia kuin määrällisiäkin tutkimuskysymyksiä. Kyselyyn vastasi hevosenomistajat omista kokemuksistaan anonyymisti. Kysely tuotti paljon vastauksia ja niistä muodostui kattava kuva nykyisestä nivelterveyden hoidon tasosta Suomessa. Tuloksista paljastui alkuperäisestä hypoteesista poikkeavia vastauksia kemiallisten hoitojen kustannusten osalta sekä hoidon tuoman levon tarpeen määrästä. Tulokset biologisten hoitojen puolesta vastasivat täysin alkuperäisiä olettamuksia aiheesta. Tutkimustyössä päästiin johtopäätökseen kemiallisten hoitojen nopeasta vastineajasta ja edullisemmasta hoitohinnasta, mutta samalla useista ja lisääntyvistä hoitokerroista. Biologisten hoitojen kohdalla kustannukset olivat kertahoidolla hieman kalliimpia, mutta pidemmällä aikavälillä käyttö muuttuu kannattavammaksi niiden tehon vaikuttaessa kauemmin. Lisäksi hoidot itsessään korjaavat nivelpintaa, kun taas kemialliset aineet kuluttavat sitä. Yhteenvetona opinnäytetyöstä muodostui yhtenäinen informatiivinen kokonaisuus kaikille hevosen omistajille sekä hevosharrastajille. Työ toimii oppaana hevosten omistajille, josta he saavat ajankohtaista tietoa hevosten nivelten ja terveyden hyvinvoinnista sekä sen ylläpitämisestä kuin myös tietoa eri vaihtoehtojen kustannuksista. This thesis aimed to highlight lesser-known treatment methods for joint health. Their benefits and costs were compared with more common treatment methods. The inspiration behind this thesis came from personal experience about the topic and passion for more knowledge on the subject. The work presents the advantages and disadvantages of various treatments that promote and improve joint health, along with rough cost estimates. The study also focused on the value and marketing claims and the lack of them in veterinarians and animal clinics. This thesis provides a general view of the overall health and well-being of horses and how different aspects of their well-being impact on joint health. The research was conducted as a survey study, including both qualitative and quantitative research questions. Horse owners responded anonymously, sharing their personal experiences on the matter. The survey received a large number of responses, forming a comprehensive picture of the current level of joint health treatments in Finland. The results revealed unexpected findings compared to the initial hypothesis, particularly regarding the costs of chemical treatments and the amount of rest required after the initial treatment. However, the results regarding biological treatments aligned entirely with the original assumptions on the subject. The study concluded that chemical treatments provide a quick response time and are initially more affordable for consumers, but they require repeated and increasingly frequent treatments. In contrast, biological treatments have a higher initial cost per treatment but prove to be more cost-effective in the long run, as their effects last longer and actively repair joint surfaces, whereas chemical treatments contribute to joint wear. In summary, the thesis provides a cohesive and informative resource for all horse owners and equestrians. It serves as a guide, offering up-to-date information on equine joint health, it´s maintenance, various treatment options and potential cost-saving measures.
