Against the backdrop of an urgent shortage of nursing staff in the nursing industry, the addition of male nurses is considered to be the key to solving this problem. However, male nurses face many problems and challenges in the process of gaining professional identity in the workplace, such as: Sexual stereotype; feeling isolated and few occupational contentment.
The aim of this article was to explore obstacles and challenges faced by male nurses in gaining professional identity. And the purpose of this study was to reveal the challenges faced by male nurses in gaining professional identity.
The study was conducted by a literature review. The articles which were utilized for analysis were searched from CINAHL database. The selected articles all met the inclusion criteria. By reading the selected articles and summarizing the viewpoints, the themes and sub-themes of this study were determined.
This literature review explained that in the process of gaining professional identity, male nurses face three obstacles and challenges - they faced social biases and against gendered career expectations as sexual stereotype; peers’ prejudice and low acceptance by patients as feeling isolated; low salary, low administration support and assigned more work as low occupational contentment.
For male nurses, gender equality education; increased salaries and benefits and more support from nursing administrators can effectively help them gain professional identity. In the future, more research is needed on how male nurses can get out of the obstacles and challenges of gaining professional identity.
